Picking the Correct Band Saw for the Job

In two primary styles, Band saws come - portable and vertical. They are similar in theory- in the form of a band which rotates around two wheels both types use a continuous blade. However, from theory practice differs as is often the case and fairly dramatically in this case.

Portable Band Saws

Wielded by an operator a portable band saw is a hand-held tool, and to cut stationary objects such as conduit generally used. Rather than the material being cut the operator is moving the saw itself. To how a stationary, vertical Bandsaws is used this is directly opposite.

With metal cutting blades these hardworking power tools are typically fitted and are developed for use by contractors and are used to cut concrete, steel stock, conduit, threaded rod, and even uni-strut.

A well-equipped portable band saw with the proper blade is capable of squarer and cleaner cuts than a reciprocating saw. Again, there will be cleaner quieter and fewer sparks cut with the right blade for the job.

Since there is little to no setup time, time is saved as they are portable - to where it is needed the operator just moves the saw. Recently, imposed by the necessity of running extension cords cordless models are removing the limitations.

When cutting thin materials they will also tend to grab and rip while coarse Belt Sanders with fewer teeth will cut the fastest. An important part of successfully using the tool is choosing the correct blade is as with most saws.

A portable band saw is not one that right out of the box you can use confidently by picking up. Weighing in between 13 and 20 pounds and depending on make and model they are fairly heavy. Allowing the weight of the saw to do most of the work, and not rush the cut is the key with successful cutting.

Common Limitations of the Band Saw

By the depth and width of the throat, both types of band saws are limited. It restricts the actual size of the material that can be cut and this limitation is called the cutting capacity.
